He proudly acknowledged the team management’s trust in him to lead the IPL-winning side. This opportunity arose after Hardik Pandya’s departure to Mumbai Indians in a lucrative deal. The Titans made a strategic decision to appoint Shubman Gill as their captain, replacing Hardik Pandya who moved to the Mumbai Indians in a trade deal. They made a significant investment of Rs. 10 crore in Australian left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson. Additionally, they successfully acquired the talented Afghanistan pace-bowling all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, potentially filling the void left by Pandya.

The Indian Premier League’s Governing Council recently announced an invitation to tender for two additional teams in August 2021. Out of the 22 interested companies, only six serious bidders emerged due to the high base price set for the new franchises. The Board of Control for Cricket in India permitted a consortium of three companies or individuals to bid for each team. In October 2021, CVC Capital Partners secured the rights to operate the Ahmedabad franchise with a bid of ₹5,625 crore (US$700 million). Prior to the IPL 2022 auctions, the franchise selected Hardik Pandya as their captain. Finally, in February 2022, the team was officially named Gujarat Titans.

Despite their weak auction methods and initial selections, the Titans managed to surprise everyone with their outstanding performances. They secured their first victory against the Lucknow Super Giants, marking the beginning of their successful campaign. Throughout the tournament, the Titans won 10 out of their 14 group matches, finishing at the top of the table with 20 points. They continued their winning streak by triumphing over the Rajasthan Royals in the first qualifier, setting up a final showdown against them. In the final match, Gujarat restricted Rajasthan to a mere 130 runs and comfortably chased down the target with 11 balls to spare. Shubman Gill sealed the victory by hitting a winning six off the first ball of the 19th over. Hardik Pandya’s exceptional performance earned him the title of Man of the Match, with impressive bowling figures of 3/17 and a valuable contribution of 34 runs from 30 balls. Critics have praised Pandya’s captaincy, bowling, and batting skills, acknowledging the effective teamwork and player management by him and the management. This remarkable achievement made Gujarat the second team to win the IPL in their inaugural season.
