Rajasthan Royals, also known as Rajasthan Royals (RR), is a professional cricket team franchise located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Established in 2008 as one of the original eight IPL franchises, the team plays at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The Royals are recognized for discovering hidden, high-potential talent. The team surprised everyone by winning the first IPL edition under Shane Warne’s leadership, despite being underestimated by the media and fans. They were also the runners-up in the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy and made it to the finals of the 2022 Indian Premier League under Sanju Samson’s captaincy and Kumar Sangakkara’s guidance.
On July 14, 2015, a panel appointed by the Supreme Court of India suspended Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for two years due to a 2013 betting scandal, preventing them from participating in the 2016 and 2017 IPL seasons. They made a comeback in the 2018 season.
Sanju Samson holds the record for the most runs scored by the team with 3403 runs, while Shane Watson is the leading wicket-taker with 67 wickets.

Rajasthan Royals Team’s Background

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in September 2007, with the Rajasthan Royals being one of the original eight teams in the inaugural season in 2008. The franchise was acquired by Emerging Media for $67 million, making it the most affordable team in the league. Currently, the team is owned by the Royals Sports Group led by Manoj Badale, with a 65% stake, along with key minority stakeholders Lachlan Murdoch and RedBird Capital Partners. Despite past ownership controversies that led to a temporary expulsion in 2010, the franchise managed to make a pre-tax profit of $7.5 million in 2009.

Expulsion from the IPL and return

In 2010, the BCCI made the decision to expel Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals from the IPL. Captain Shane Warne was left puzzled by the expulsion, suspecting foul play and ulterior motives from the BCCI. Rajasthan Royals appealed against the decision, leading to a legal battle in the Mumbai High Court. The case was adjourned to avoid clashing with Diwali celebrations, with a revised date set for 15 November 2010.
Subsequently, the Royals informed the Bombay High Court of their intention to negotiate with an arbitrator in hopes of reconciling with the IPL. The arbitrator ruled that the Royals could remain in the IPL for six weeks during the investigation, with the BCCI unable to change rules that could harm the team. This period included the player auction, where Rajasthan Royals took part. The Bombay High Court dismissed BCCI’s appeals to remove the Royals from the IPL during this time, leading to the teams being allowed to stay in the league.
Due to losses in court cases and damage to their reputation, the BCCI chose not to pursue further legal action against Rajasthan Royals or Kings XI Punjab, permitting both teams to continue participating in the IPL.

Rajasthan Royals Ban in 2015

In 2015, the Rajasthan Royals, a team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), faced a serious problem. Some of their players and staff were caught doing bad things during matches. They were found to be involved in something called “spot-fixing.” This means they were doing things during matches that they weren’t supposed to, like trying to control specific parts of the game for illegal betting.
Because of this, the team got in big trouble. The IPL, which is like a big cricket tournament in India, banned the Rajasthan Royals from playing in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. This was a very serious punishment. It was decided by a special committee appointed by the Supreme Court of India.
The ban was meant to teach the team a lesson and show that such behavior is not acceptable in cricket. It was also a way to protect the integrity and fairness of the game. During the ban, the Rajasthan Royals had to take time to reflect on what happened and work hard to regain trust. After the ban was over, they could join the IPL again, but they had to be very careful to follow the rules from then on.

Rajasthan Royals Team history 2008

In 2008
Before the start of the inaugural IPL season, Rajasthan Royals were seen as the weakest team, and their first loss to Delhi Daredevils fueled doubts. However, in their first home game in Jaipur, they secured a crucial win against Kings XI Punjab, led by Shane Watson’s impressive 76 not out. This victory, followed by another against Deccan Chargers, boosted morale, with Yusuf Pathan shining. Their winning streak included victories over Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, but they suffered a loss to Mumbai Indians. The Royals then won five consecutive matches, securing a spot in the semi-finals with a win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the final against Chennai Super Kings, they clinched victory by three wickets on June 1, 2008. Shane Watson’s outstanding all-round performance earned him the tournament’s Man of the Series award, while Shane Warne’s leadership was lauded.
