History: -[CSK]

In September 2007 the BCCI announced the launch of the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) to be
held in 2008. The BCCI revealed the owners of 8 city-based IPL franchises in January 2008. Chennai was
sold to India Cements in October 2008 for a price of $91 million. It was the fourth-most expensive
franchise in the league after Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, and India Cements held the franchise
rights for a period of 10 years. The Chennai Super Kings are owned by N.Srinivasan, the former Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the International Cricket Council (ICC). On 22 January 2015, the
franchisee of CSK cricket Ltd was transferred to an independent entity after Supreme
Court ruled against the BCCI‘s proposal to allow board officials to hold commercial interests in IPL and
ICC T20s.

Season First:- Chennai Super Kings (2008-2009)

In January 2008, during the first player auctions of the inaugural season of the IPL, the Chennai franchise
acquired a number of present-day world class cricketers including MS dhoni, Matthew
Hayden, Stephen Fleming, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Michael Hussey. Dhoni ended up being the most
expensive player of the auction as the Chennai franchise purchased him for USD 1.5 million. The CSK  named Dhoni as their captain and appointed Kepler wessels as their head coach. The Super Kings played their first match on 19 April 2008 at Mohali, where they defeated Kings XI Punjab by 33 runs. The Super Kings posted a total of 240/5 in the 20 overs, the highest total in the tournament. The Super Kings finished the league stage with 8 wins from 14 matches and finished 3rd in the points table. The Super Kings beat Kings XI Punjab in the semifinal by 9 wickets. In the final, the Super Kings lost by 3 wickets to Rajasthan Royals at Mumbai. The CSK were batting first and posted a total of 163/5. The final was decided by the last delivery of the match. They also qualified for the Champions League T20 alongside Rajasthan. However, the tournament was cancelled due to the Mumbai attacks in 2008. The Super Kings and Rajasthan were each compensated $5 million.  Fleming retired from all-format cricket after the first IPL season and Wessels took over as coach for the CSK for the following season, which was scheduled to take place in South Africa.
The Chennai Super Kings made a big investment in Andrew Flintoff in the 2009 season. At the auction, Flintoff was the highest paid cricketer in the IPL along with Kevin Pietersen, who was bought by Bangalore for
the same price. However, he only played 3 matches for the Super Kings due to a knee injury which ruled
him out for the season. Hussey also opted out of the IPL for the 2009 season in order to focus on the
Ashes. The CSK finished second in the league table with 17 points after 14 matches. At the semifinal stage, they had a good chance of making it to the final for the second time in a row, but they lost to
Royal Challengers by six wickets. On the other hand, opener Matthew Hayden was awarded the Orange
Cap, which is the most prestigious trophy in the T20 format, for leading the season in terms of runs with
572 in 12 innings, 5 fifties and a strike rate of 145.

In 2010- CSK

In 2010, Chennai Super Kings had a bad start to the season, winning only 2 out of 7 matches. However, they won 4 out of their next 5 games in the season, largely thanks to the contributions of Vijay and Raina. After
losing at home to Daredevils in the second match of the season, the CSK had a must-win game against Kings XI Punjab in Dharamsala. They won by 6 wickets, chasing down a target of 193 with 2 balls
to spare as skipper MS Dhoni top-scored with an unbeaten 54 off 29 balls. With 7 wins out of 14 matches,
Chennai ended up 3rd with a better net run rate than the other 3 teams who finished on 14 points each.
In the semi-final, the Super Kings posted a modest total of 142/7 off 20 overs against Deccan Chargers,
who were led by Doug Bollinger’s 4/13 in 4 overs. The Chargers were then bundled out for 104. The CSK won by 38 runs to qualify for the final. In the final, they faced Mumbai Indians at home ground, who were one of the favourites in the tournament. Super Kings won by 22 runs to become the first ever team to win their first IPL title after the CSK qualified for the Champions League T20 in South Africa on the basis of their performance in the tournament. The Super Kings made 168/5 after 12 overs in reply to Mumbai Indians’ 68/3, thanks to the 57-ball 57-run partnership between Raina (35) and skipper Rohit Sharma (36). The Super Kings’ spin duo of Ashwin and Pandya conceded just 41 runs off the 8 overs they bowled in the match. The CSK were put in Group A of the Champions League along with the champions of the T20 leagues from Australia (Australia), South Africa (South Africa), New Zealand (New Zealand) and Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka). The Super Kings had triumphed in three matches and lost one Super Over to the Victoria Bushrangers in the group stage. The Chennai Super Kings defeated their IPL rivals in the semi final at Durban by 52 runs, with Raina scoring an unbeaten 94 from 48 balls. In the final, they defeated the Chevrolet Warriors at Johannesburg for the first time in the history of the IPL, with Vijay scoring an unbeaten 58 and Ashwin leading the wicket-takers with 8 wickets. Both Vijay and Ashwin were awarded the Golden Bat, which is given to the player who scores the most runs throughout the tournament. The season ended with the retirement of Matthew Hayden.

The Chennai Super Kings’ home ground is the historical M.A.Chidambaram stadium (Chepauk) in Chennai, which was named after the former BCCI president M.A. Chandrabharam. This stadium is one of India’s oldest continuously used stadiums. The stadium belongs to the Tamil Nadu cricket Association and as of 2013 has a capacity of 50 thousand. The stadium underwent a massive renovation in 2010 for the hosting of some of the games of the 2011 BCCI Cricket World Cup.[88] The capacity of the stadium increased from 36 thousand to 50 thousand. Three new stands were constructed during the renovation. CSK have won 70.91% of their matches at this venue which is also known as ‘Fortress chepauk’ or ‘Lions’ den’.[88] In the 2011 IPL season, Chennai Super Kings won all home matches (8 matches) and also won the tournament at home by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. This made CSK the 1st team in IPL history to win all home games in a single season and also the 1st team to win at home in the tournament.
Due to issues with the Government of Tamil Nadu, CSK played all home games at Ranchi in 2014.
In 2018, CSK only managed to play one home game against KKR in Chennai as members of some fringe
political parties staged protests in front of the stadium and in several areas of the city demanding that
the IPL matches be shifted out of Chennai until the establishment of Cauvery management board as
ordered by Supreme Court. The Chennai police claimed that they were unable to provide sufficient
security personnel for the remaining six CSK home matches at Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium
in Pune despite tight security arrangements for the game against KKR.
