The Mumbai Indians are a cricket team that participates in the Indian Premier League. They are a professional franchise based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The team was established in 2008 and is owned by Reliance Industries, which is India’s largest conglomerate. The ownership is through their subsidiary, Indiawin Sports. The Mumbai Indians (MI) have been playing their home matches at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which has a seating capacity of 33,108.
In 2017, the Mumbai Indians (MI) achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing the $100 million mark in brand value, making them the first franchise to do so among the IPL teams. Fast forward to 2019, the brand value of Mumbai Indians (MI) is now estimated to be around ₹809 crore (approximately $115 million), solidifying their position as the IPL franchise with the highest brand value for the fourth consecutive year.
In the final of the 2011 Champions League Twenty20, Mumbai Indians emerged victorious by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore with a margin of 31 runs. This triumph marked their first title in the tournament. Two years later, in 2013, they clinched their first IPL title by defeating Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs in the final. Later that same year, they secured their second Champions League Twenty20 title by defeating the Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs. Mumbai Indians (MI) continued their winning streak by claiming their second IPL title on 24 May 2015, defeating the Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs in the final. This victory made them the third team to win multiple IPL titles. On 21 May 2017, they added another feather to their cap by winning their third IPL title in a thrilling final against the Rising Pune Supergiant, triumphing by a mere 1 run. This achievement made them the first team to secure three IPL titles. During the course of the tournament, they also achieved the milestone of winning their 100th T20 match, becoming the first team to do so. In 2019, Mumbai Indians once again made history by winning their record-breaking fourth IPL title. They achieved this feat by defeating CSK by just 1 run in the Indian Premier League IPL Final on 12 May 2019. Continuing their dominance, they secured their fifth IPL title on 10 November 2020 by defeating Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets, making them the first team to achieve this milestone.
Hardik Pandya is presently leading the Mumbai Indians as their captain. Prior to the 2017 season, Mahela Jayawardene was designated as the head coach of the team. Rohit Sharma holds the record for being the top run scorer for the team, whereas Lasith Malinga has taken the most wickets for the team.
Mumbai Indians History:-
In September 2007, the Indian Premier League (IPL), a Twenty20 competition, was established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The BCCI then revealed the owners of eight city-based franchises in January 2008. The Mumbai franchise was purchased by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) for a staggering $111.9 million, making it the highest-priced team in the league. RIL, which is owned by Mukesh Ambani, secured the franchise rights for a duration of 10 years.
In 2008 :- Four players were designated as icon players for their respective city franchises in the Indian Premier League(IPL). This meant that these players could only play for their city team and not for any other team. Sachin Tendulkar was chosen as Mumbai’s icon player. As an icon player, Tendulkar was entitled to earn 15% more than the highest-paid player in his team. During the player auctions for the first IPL season in February 2008, the Mumbai franchise acquired several renowned international cricketers including Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga, and Robin Uthappa. Tendulkar was appointed as the team’s captain, with former India cricketer Lalchand Rajput serving as the head coach. However, Tendulkar got injured before the start of the 2008 season, leading Harbhajan Singh to take over as captain initially. Unfortunately, the team had a rough start, losing their first four games by significant margins. Their first match was a five-wicket defeat to the Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 20, 2008, at the Wankhede Stadium. Harbhajan, acting as the stand-in captain, was later suspended from the tournament for allegedly slapping Sreesanth during a league match against Kings XI Punjab. Shaun Pollock then assumed the role of captain until Tendulkar’s return on May 24. Under Pollock’s leadership, Mumbai won six out of their next six games, leaving them needing to win two more out of their remaining four matches to secure a spot in the semi-finals. However, Mumbai faced three consecutive defeats in the last over, including two off the last ball, before finally winning their last league match. They finished fifth in the points table with 7 wins and 7 losses, missing out on a semi-final spot by just one point.
In 2009 :- The 2009 season took place in South Africa because it coincided with the multi-phase 2009 Indian general elections. As a result, the Government of India declined to deploy the Indian paramilitary forces to provide security for the IPL. Prior to the start of the season, Mumbai Indians made some trades, exchanging Robin Uthappa for Zaheer Khan with Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Ashish Nehra for Shikhar Dhawan with the Delhi Daredevils. Shaun Pollock retired after the first season and assumed the role of head coach for the team. Lasith Malinga, who had missed the previous season due to an injury, made a comeback to the team. During the player auction, Mumbai acquired South African batsman JP Duminy to bolster their batting department. Despite winning their opening match against the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai struggled to maintain consistent performances throughout the season. They heavily relied on Duminy and Tendulkar’s batting, as well as Malinga’s bowling, with minimal contributions from other players. With only five wins out of 14 matches, Mumbai finished in seventh place on the league table.
In 2010 :- During the 2010 players auction, Mumbai Indians acquired the services of Trinidadian all-rounder Kieron Pollard for a sum of $750,000 after a secret tiebreaker. Following the auction, they signed up ten Indian players who were yet to make their international debut, out of which seven had previously played in the Indian Cricket League (ICL). Robin Singh, a former Indian cricketer, was appointed as the head coach of the team, while Shaun Pollock took on the role of the bowling coach. Due to the ongoing renovation work at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai had to shift their home venue to Brabourne Stadium for the season, which also hosted some matches of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Mumbai Indians made a strong start to the season, winning seven out of their first eight games and securing the top spot in the points table. This early success was largely attributed to the outstanding performances of players like Sachin Tendulkar, Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu, and Saurabh Tiwary. They continued their good form by winning three of their remaining six league games, finishing with a total of 20 points from 14 matches, securing their position at the top of the points table.
In the semi-final, Mumbai Indians defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs, thanks to an exceptional all-round performance by Kieron Pollard, who scored an unbeaten 33 runs off just 13 balls and also took three wickets for 17 runs. However, their journey came to an end in the final as they were defeated by the Chennai Super Kings by 22 runs. The Mumbai team management faced criticism for their “strategic errors” during the final, such as the decision to send Abhishek Nayar and Harbhajan Singh to bat at positions 3 and 4 respectively, while JP Duminy and Kieron Pollard were sent lower down the order at 7 and 8.
Despite the loss in the final, Mumbai Indians’ skipper Sachin Tendulkar had an outstanding season, scoring 618 runs at an average of 47.53 and a strike rate of 132.6. His impressive performance earned him the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in the season. Mumbai Indians also qualified for the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 but were eliminated in the group stage, winning two matches and suffering two defeats in the process.
In 2011:- In 2011, the IPL Governing Council announced that each franchise in the IPL could retain up to four players from their 2010 squad, while the remaining international players would be auctioned. The Mumbai Indians chose to retain Tendulkar, Harbhajan, Pollard, and Malinga for a total of $4.5 million. With this retention, the franchise had $4.5 million to spend at the auction. At the auction, they acquired Indian batsman Rohit Sharma for $2 million, former Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds for $850,000, and pacer Munaf Patel for $700,000. Mumbai had a strong start to the season, winning eight of their first ten league games. However, they then experienced a dip in form, suffering three consecutive defeats before securing a last-ball win in their final league match. They finished third on the points table with 18 points from 14 games, earning them a spot in the Eliminator. The Eliminator took place at the Wankhede Stadium, where Mumbai faced the Kolkata Knight Riders. Mumbai won the toss and chose to bowl first, restricting Kolkata to 147 runs in 20 overs. Mumbai successfully chased down the target, losing six wickets with four balls to spare. Munaf Patel was awarded the Man of the Match for his impressive bowling figures of 3/27. With this victory, Mumbai advanced to the Qualifying final against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The winner of this match would go on to face the Super Kings in the final. Once again, Mumbai skipper Tendulkar won the toss and elected to field. The Royal Challengers set Mumbai a target of 186 runs. However, Mumbai struggled to maintain a steady partnership and could only score 142/8, falling short by 43 runs. The top two leading wicket-takers of the season were Mumbai Indians pacers Lasith Malinga and Munaf Patel, with 28 and 22 wickets respectively.
In 2012:- Prior to the commencement of the 2012 season, the Mumbai Indians made a trade with the Kings XI Punjab and the Deccan Chargers, acquiring Dinesh Karthik and Pragyan Ojha respectively, for undisclosed amounts. During the auction, the franchise also purchased R. P. Singh, Thisara Perera, and Mitchell Johnson. Shortly before the first game of the season, Sachin Tendulkar stepped down as captain, leading to Harbhajan Singh being appointed as the new captain. In the initial phase of the league, Mumbai experienced a mixed performance with four wins and four defeats, including three losses at their home ground. The team struggled to establish a consistent opening combination, as Tendulkar missed four matches due to injury and other opening batsmen failed to perform consistently. In late April, Mitchell Johnson suffered an injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the season, with Dwayne Smith being named as his replacement in the squad. However, Mumbai improved their performance in the second half of the league, winning six out of their eight matches. They finished third on the points table with 20 points from 16 matches, securing a spot in the Eliminator against the fourth-placed Chennai Super Kings in Bangalore. Mumbai won the toss and elected to field first. Despite losing two early wickets, Chennai managed to post a competitive total of 187/5 in 20 overs, largely due to the unbeaten 51 off 20 balls by their captain, MS Dhoni. Mumbai’s chase started well, reaching 47/0 in the fifth over, but they lost wickets at regular intervals and ultimately ended at 149/9, losing the match by 38 runs. As one of the top teams in the season, Mumbai directly qualified for the 2012 Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa, along with the other three IPL teams. Placed in Group B, Mumbai had a disappointing tournament, failing to win any matches and recording three defeats and one no result.
In 2013 :- Mumbai Indians had a rough start to their campaign in the Indian Premier League. They suffered a loss against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, mainly due to the outstanding performances of Chris Gayle and Vinay Kumar. However, they managed to bounce back in that match, thanks to the efforts of Dinesh Karthik, although they fell short by just one run.
In their second match against the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai’s openers performed well, but it was Dinesh Karthik and Kieron Pollard who helped them set a defendable score. The Mumbai Indians bowlers started strongly by dismissing Murali Vijay, and the match went down to the wire. With the Super Kings needing 16 runs off the last over, Munaf Patel bowled brilliantly and dismissed MS Dhoni on the first ball, leading Mumbai to a comfortable 9-run victory.
Moving on to their third match against the Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai once again lost their openers, Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar. However, Dinesh Karthik, this time accompanied by Rohit Sharma, played a crucial role in helping Mumbai reach a formidable total of 209/5. Despite a strong performance from David Warner, Mumbai’s bowlers managed to dismiss him, leading to a collapse in the Delhi Daredevils’ batting lineup and a comfortable 44-run victory for Mumbai.
In their next match against the Pune Warriors India, Mumbai got off to a fantastic start with a 54-run opening partnership between Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar. Rohit Sharma then continued the momentum, helping Mumbai reach a total of 183/3 and securing a comfortable 41-run victory.
However, Mumbai’s winning streak came to an end in their match against the Rajasthan Royals, where they were bundled out for just 92 runs, resulting in an 83-run victory for the Royals. This defeat led to Ricky Ponting stepping down as captain and retiring from all forms of cricket. Rohit Sharma, who was in good batting form, was appointed as the new captain.
Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, the Mumbai Indians showed significant improvement and went on to win their first IPL title.
In the year 2014 :- Mumbai Indians had a rough start as they faced defeat in 5 matches during the UAE leg against Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Daredevils by significant margins. However, they managed to perform admirably in their 5th match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain their winning streak and subsequently lost matches against their respective opponents.
In 2015 :- Mumbai Indians emerged victorious in the IPL, securing their second title, after defeating Chennai Super Kings by a margin of 41 runs. Initially, Mumbai faced a setback with four consecutive defeats in the tournament, primarily due to their bowling performance. Unfortunately, Aaron Finch and Corey Anderson were sidelined due to injuries for the remainder of the season. However, this paved the way for Lendl Simmons to make a comeback into the team. Simmons played a crucial role throughout the season, providing solid starts with six half-centuries to his name. He emerged as Mumbai’s top scorer with 540 runs and jointly held the second position (alongside Ajinkya Rahane) in terms of total runs scored for the season, just behind David Warner. The inclusion of another talented bowler, Mitchell McClenaghan, provided valuable support to Lasith Malinga at the beginning of the innings. Mumbai Indians displayed an impressive comeback, winning nine out of their last ten matches, ultimately clinching the title. This remarkable achievement was made possible by outstanding batting performances from Simmons, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, and Kieron Pollard, as well as exceptional bowling contributions from Malinga, McClenaghan, and Harbhajan Singh.
In 2016-2018 :- During the Vivo IPL 2016 Auction, Mumbai Indians made several acquisitions including Tim Southee, Nathu Singh, Jos Buttler, Jitesh Sharma, KP Kamath, Krunal Pandya, and Deepak Punia. However, despite their efforts, they ended the season in the fifth position on the points table.
Moving on to IPL 2017, the Mumbai Indians had a remarkable performance, securing the top spot on the points table by winning 10 out of 14 matches. Their journey didn’t stop there as they clinched the trophy in a thrilling finale against Rising Pune Supergiant. This victory marked their third IPL title, solidifying their status as the most successful team in the history of the tournament.
In IPL 2018, the Mumbai Indians faced a tougher challenge, finishing in the fifth spot after winning 6 matches and losing 8.
In the final of Vivo IPL 2019 :- Mumbai Indians emerged victorious over Chennai Super Kings by a margin of 1 run, securing their record-breaking 4th championship title. The match concluded with an exhilarating climax, as Chennai Super Kings required 2 runs off the final delivery. However, Mumbai Indians’ bowler, Lasith Malinga, delivered a crucial wicket, sealing the victory for his team. This triumph marked Mumbai Indians’ 4th IPL trophy, making them the sole team to achieve such a feat and solidifying their status as the most successful team in the history of the tournament.
In 2020 – 2023 :-
In 2020, the matches took place in the UAE due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in India. Despite having a strong team, Mumbai Indians were underestimated due to their previous records in the UAE and a superstition surrounding winning titles in odd years. However, Mumbai Indians defied all odds, emerged as the most successful team of the season, and secured their fifth title.
Initially, Mumbai Indians faced difficulties on the slow pitch of Chennai, which was one of the neutral venues for IPL 2021. They suffered defeats in 3 out of the first 5 matches they played. The main reason behind their struggles was the underperformance of their lower middle order. However, Mumbai Indians managed to bounce back, winning their next 2 games, with the middle order making significant contributions to secure victories. Eventually, they finished the season in the 5th position.
In 2022, two new teams were introduced. Prior to the mega auctions for IPL 2022, Mumbai Indians retained 4 players – Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, and Surya Kumar Yadav. Surprisingly, they decided not to retain Hardik Pandya, who had been a core player for a long time. During the auctions, Mumbai Indians made a significant purchase by acquiring Ishan Kishan for a hefty sum of ₹15.25 crore, which stands as the second-highest bid for an Indian player to date.
The season began on a disappointing note for Mumbai Indians in 2022, as they suffered defeats in their first 8 matches, marking the worst start in the history of the tournament. They managed to salvage some pride by winning 4 out of the 14 matches played, but ultimately finished at the bottom of the points table, making it their worst season to date.
The 2023 season proved to be a rollercoaster ride for the Mumbai Indians. With their key bowler Jasprit Bumrah sidelined due to injury, the pace attack was led by English spearhead Jofra Archer, supported by several domestic bowlers acquired during the 2023 auction. Despite a slow start, losing 2 out of the first 3 matches, Mumbai Indians made a strong comeback with impressive performances from emerging bowler Akash Madhval and young talent Tilak Varma. They secured a spot in the playoffs, finishing in 4th position to conclude the season.
Mumbai Indians Team identity :-
Uniform :- The team’s primary color is blue, and it is adorned with golden stripes on both sides of the jersey. The team maintained a similar color scheme in 2008 and 2009, with Idea as the main sponsor, although there were slight variations in shade and additional sponsors. In 2010, a new kit featuring golden stripes was introduced. The kit used in 2010 continued to be used in 2011, with Hero Honda as the primary sponsor. Additionally, the 2011 jersey incorporated three gold stripes on the side, extending towards the back, specifically for the new players in the team. Adidas served as the kit manufacturer from the inception of IPL in 2008 until 2014. However, in 2015, Performax, an in-house brand of Reliance Trends, took over as the kit manufacturer.
Team’s slogan, Named, Logo :- The team’s slogan is “Duniya Hila Denge Hum…”, which means “We will shake the world.” The initial anthem of the Mumbai Indians was created around this slogan, and it featured the popular Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan in a promotional video campaign.
Originally, the team was intended to be named “Mumbai Razors,” and its logo is the Sudarshan Chakra (or Razor). However, Sachin Tendulkar proposed the name “Mumbai Indians,” which was ultimately chosen.
Mumbai Indians IPL Auction 2024:-
In the IPL Auction 2024 on Tuesday, Mumbai Indians bolstered their bowling lineup by acquiring Gerald Coetzee, Dilshan Madushanka, and Nuwan Thushara. These additions are expected to provide valuable support to Jasprit Bumrah. Furthermore, the Hardik Pandya-led franchise made a last-minute decision to secure the services of Mohammad Nabi, an experienced spinner from Afghanistan, to strengthen their spin department.

Mumbai Indians Home Ground :-
During the first two seasons of the IPL, the Mumbai Indians chose the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as their home ground. However, in 2010, for the third season, they had to relocate to the Brabourne Stadium as the Wankhede Stadium was undergoing renovations for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. At the Brabourne Stadium, the Mumbai Indians had an impressive record, winning six out of the seven matches played there that season.

Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians match scorecard :-
The IPL 2023 witnessed another thrilling match come to a close. Throughout the run chase, the Mumbai Indians seemed to have control, but the Delhi Capitals managed to turn the tide with well-timed wickets. Both team captains played contrasting innings, with Rohit Sharma’s performance proving to be the match-defining knock. This game exemplified the importance of strike rate in this format. While scoring runs and anchoring the innings may be overrated, the strike rate undoubtedly plays a significant role.
